as the annual Nissei Week Japanese Festival, the Hanamatsuri celebration of Bhudda's
birth, memorial services for the dead of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a rousing Taiko
Festival in 1987 and the open air Kita Takigi (Torchlight) Noh in 1989.
The Plaza is available for rent. For more information, contact Marlene Lee at

The
James Irvine Garden
The James Irvine Garden (Seiryu-en, or Garden
of the Clear Stream) is an oasis in the central city. It was built
in the tradition of Japanese
Gardens and covers a sloping, triangular area of 8,500 square
feet adjacent to the Center Building and the The George & Sakaye
Aratani Japan America Theatre. It was designed by Takeo Uesugi, and
was completed December
1979.
The garden received the prestigious National landscape Award from the American
Association of Nurserymen which was presented by First Lady Nancy Reagan in cermonies
at the White House in 1981. This is the highest and oldest national honor such
a project can receive in the field of environmental improvement and community
beautification.
May all who step into the garden find joy and a sense of peace, harmony with
nature and inspiration from the indomitable spirit of the community pioneers.
The James Irvine Garden is available for rent. For more information, contact
Marlene Lee at 213-628-2725, ext 113 or lee@jaccc.org
